Saanti Martin

Saanti Martin is a new Health Educator at Center on Halsted. Three years ago, I started in non-profit. Initially I was clueless, but I knew that wanted to work with people in need. Since I was familiar with the LGBTQ+ Lakeview community as a teen, I said “why not get into the field where not only am I helping people, I will be helping my people?’ After getting to know “the ins and outs” about the field, I began to get hungry for more. I had previously worked in health care and sales.  However, nothing ever pulled my heart strings as much as non-for-profit. I guess you can say I wanted to be up close and personal. HIV/AIDS was a topic I knew about all too well! It had an impact on me because of family and friends and the stigma that I saw in my community where I grew up as well social settings that I was in at the time. HIV/AIDS was swept under the rug where I was raised, it wasn’t a “regular “conversation. Topics like HIV prevention, medication adherence, or harm reduction were topics that were not fragile, but sacred! Lastly for the past three years there may have been ups and downs in my journey, I wouldn’t have it any other way as long I can continue to be voice, an advocate, and an ally.
